World Basketball: the first qualified Americans

The United States, three-time defending champions and big favorites to succeed them, won the clash of Pool A against China (77-63) and validated their ticket first for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Basketball World Cup, Saturday in Sydney.

The Americans, who have three wins in as many games, sped up late in the first half to secure a relatively easy win, although the Chinese came back to nine points in the game.

Coach Cheryl Reeve gave playing time to her three players who had not yet stepped on the court after playing in the WNBA final on Sunday – the North American championship – including A’ja Wilson. The star inside had a successful debut in the competition, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
