What is stickball, a street sport reborn in Sens?

Mixed and even intergenerational, stickball is a street sport that can be played from the age of twelve. In Sens, Laurent Carpentier, the president of the baseball club, is an unconditional fan of this discipline. As such, he has just created a section within this association in order to develop the practice on the sports platforms of the Lycée de Sens.

« I return to my first loves »

Already five years ago, a similar attempt had made it possible to train players in stickball, then the club had refocused its efforts on baseball. « I return to my first love but the baseball section, entrusted to Clément Pineau, is maintained. It has a dozen members », points out Laurent Carpentier, child of Sens who grew up in the Champs-Plaisants.

It’s the kif, we can play right away, and anywhere.

« The rules of stickball are simple and this sport requires few players and equipment. Moreover, it can be practiced everywhere », recalls Laurent Carpentier. A piece of wood, be it a broom or rake handle or even a curtain rod, serves as a bat. The ball is made of rubber, so no need for gloves. « It’s kif, we can play right away, anywhere, » adds the manager, who offered a demonstration on Saturday September 24, 2022, in the afternoon, on the forecourt of the cathedral.

About ten players so far

A dozen members currently make up the brand new section. It is also possible to play wiffle, a variant with a plastic ball. « We want to offer competition by forming a local league, in Sens. And with twelve players, we can already make two teams », continues Laurent Carpentier.

We have to create everything in terms of communication and work materials, but we are motivated.

« As it’s a very, very confidential discipline, you have to create everything in terms of communication and work materials, but we’re motivated, » adds the manager. The section is looking into several projects « to raise awareness and bring the game everywhere ». She should thus teach stickball to beneficiaries of the local mission, to show them how to create a team spirit, a quality which can prove to be important in the professional environment. The section is also considering the possibility of involving young people with disabilities. Contacts with the special education and home care service (Sessad), which takes care of deficient children from 0 to 20 years old, are envisaged. Finally, exchanges of practice with the tennis club, and perhaps the volleyball club, are being studied.
