Van de Goor resigns as tournament director of the Volleyball World Cup after a bicycle accident | NOW

Bas van de Goor has been forced to resign from his position as tournament director of the Women’s Volleyball World Cup. The former volleyball international fell during cycling last weekend. He is still recovering from the accident. Lonneke Slöetjes, until recently player of the Orange squad, takes over some of the tasks.

Van de Goor, who became Olympic champion with the volleyball men in 1996, broke some ribs during the bicycle accident, resulting in a collapsed lung. In addition, an operation on his pelvis was required.

“Fortunately, the emergency services were quickly on the scene,” said 51-year-old Van de Goor in a statement. He is still in the hospital in Apeldoorn. “The operation has now been completed and went according to plan. It took me the past week to recover from the blow and to recover from the operation. I hope to be able to start rehabilitation soon.”

Slöetjes takes over tasks

Former international Manon Numberdor-Flier, who held the position together with Van der Goor, can now count on help from former teammate Slöetjes. In February 2021, 31-year-old Slöetjes said goodbye to top volleyball.

The Volleyball World Cup starts on Friday September 23 in our own country. The Netherlands opens the tournament in Arnhem against Kenya. The tournament is co-organized by Poland. The final will take place on October 15.
