The top 10 players

  • Ons Jabeur (TUN/WTA 5) s. Elizabeth Mandlik (USA/WTA 144) 7:5, 6:2.
  • Maria Sakkari (GRE/WTA 3) b. Xiu Wang (CHN/WTA 75) 6:3, 5:7, 5:7

The 2nd round has for Our Jabeur in Flushing Meadows once again not too high a hurdle. The 28-year-old Tunisian easily defeated the American Elizabeth Mandlik (WTA 144) 7-5, 6-2. For the fifth in the world rankings, it is the third entry de suite into the 1/16 finals at the US Open, but Jabeur has never come beyond that. If she wants to make a debut in “Big Apple”, she has to defeat Mandlik’s compatriot Shelby Rogers (WTA 31) in the next round.

After 2:43 hours of play, the elimination of Maria Sakkari in New York, on the other hand, a big surprise was perfect. The third in the world rankings lost to the Chinese Xiyu Wang (WTA 75) in three sets 6: 3, 5: 7, 5: 7. After the Greek had clearly won the opening set with two service breakthroughs, she was broken three times in the 3rd set. In the last round, even a 3-1 lead with a break shouldn’t be enough for Sakkari to avert the prompt out.

It comes to the US duel Gauff vs. Keys

Both of those Americans Coco Gauff (WTA 12) and Madison Keys (WTA 20) mastered their tasks and will meet in the third round in a direct duel. Keys, the US Open runner-up in 2017, showed some trouble in 6: 4, 5: 7, 7: 6 (10: 6) against the Italian Camila Giorgi (WTA 67). Gauff defeated the Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse (WTA 101) in two sets 6: 2, 7: 6 (7: 4), but also had to get through a difficult phase.

“In the second round I was 4:5 and 0:30 behind, I could have given up the sentence and prepared for the third. The same at 15:40. But I didn’t do it,” said 18-year-old Gauff. “I think that shows how I’ve grown. In the past I would have lost a sentence like that. It’s about learning, and I’m doing that.”

Champion of 2019 wins at 01:04 local time

Bianca Andreescu (WTA 48) has the highly anticipated duel with Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA/WTA 15) won. The Canadian, who won the US Open in 2019 and was repeatedly plagued by injuries as a result, surprisingly won 6-2, 6-4 against one of the season’s promoted players. The match at Louis Armstrong Stadium did not end until 1:04 a.m. New York time.

Andreescu’s next opponent in the 3rd round is the one who is also on a high Caroline Garcia (WTA 17). The French recently won the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
