US Open, day 6: Jule Niemeier with a good chance of reaching the round of 16

With Jule Niemeier, the last remaining German tennis pro is fighting for a place in the round of 16 of the US Open. It’s against a Chinese. Also in action: Rafael Nadal and another Spanish hope – and the number one for women. Tim Pütz is in the round of 16 in doubles.

By progressing to the third round, Niemeier has already shown that Wimbledon’s success in reaching the quarter-finals was no accident. “I’m not really thinking about a Grand Slam victory yet. I want to enjoy every match, absorb everything and take it with me,” said the 23-year-old after her smooth victories against Julia Putintseva and Sofia Kenin. With the young Chinese Zheng Qinwen, only number 108 in the world, a “very good player is waiting. She has an extremely hard forehand and can play very quickly.”

Nadal, who meets long-time companion Richard Gasquet from France in the night session, already has significantly more experience in front of big scenes. On the way to the 23rd Grand Slam title he was aiming for, he struggled with teething problems in round two against Fabio Fognini, but in the end it was enough for a four-set win. “It was probably one of my worst starts to a match ever. To be able to continue after a game like that means a lot to me.” Even a bloody nose, contracted by his own racket, didn’t stop him.

One of the highlights from an American point of view should be Lauren Davis’ game against the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek, who would be a possible opponent of Niemeier in the round of 16.

US Open: Tim Pütz in the double round of 16

Tim Pütz reached the round of 16 in doubles at the US Open. The Davis Cup player won alongside New Zealander Michael Venus 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 3) against the Portuguese Nuno Borges/Francisco Cabral. For the 34-year-old from Frankfurt it is already the third entry into the round of 16 in a Grand Slam this year.

At the Australian Open, the Pütz/Venus team went one round further into the quarter-finals. They are now trying to do the same against Juan Sebastian Cabal/Robert Farah from Colombia. Pütz is the last remaining German in the competition. The two-time French Open winners Kevin Krawietz/Andreas Mies failed in the second round.
