US Open 2022: Victoria Azarenka finds clear words about sexual abuse in tennis

“It’s really sad and makes me very emotional. If I had a daughter, I would ask myself if I should let her play tennis,” said Azarenka at a press conference during the US Open. “I would have big concerns about that.”

The 33-year-old also thanked French tennis player Fiona Ferro, who had accused her former coach Bouteyre of sexual abuse, for her courage. “I hope she comes out of this situation stronger,” said Azarenka, who is a member of the WTA Player Council.

The then underage Ferro is said to have been abused and raped by her coach between 2012 and 2015. Bouteyre, who now has to answer in court, defends himself against the allegations. “In his opinion, it was a love story,” his lawyer Virginie Pin told the AFP press agency.

In order to uncover and prevent such cases as early as possible in the future, Azarenka also takes the media to task. “Do your research, help people to open up more,” demanded the two-time Australian Open winner. “Hopefully we can eradicate these types of incidents bit by bit.”
