Putin draws in ex-national players

Shock for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (37)!

The ex-Russian national player was drafted into the army by President Vladimir Putin (69) and now has to fight in the Ukraine war. As Bilyaletdinov’s father Rinat told sports.ru, his son received a letter from the Russian government.

Rinat: “Diniyar really got an invitation. It’s difficult to talk about those emotions.”

Mainly because Bilyaletdinov actually didn’t do any real military service at all!

Rinat: “He didn’t serve. He took the oath, but it was a special service with a sporting focus. He has spent his entire service in sports. That was 19 years ago when he played in the youth national team.”

And there’s another reason the family finds the draft weird. Bilyaletdinov’s father: “The law still says you can only draft reservists who are 35 or younger – and my son is 37. So there seems to be a discrepancy here.”

A week ago, Putin ordered a partial mobilization of Russian reservists. Around 300,000 men who have done military service in the past are to be drafted into the army and fight in Ukraine.

Rinat Bilyaletdinov: “If it were a general mobilization, there would be no doubts. But the President has ordered a partial mobilization, then everything should be done according to the law. We will now find out if the letter is correct or if it was sent too soon. Anything could have happened.”

Fearing being drafted into the war, thousands of Russian men are trying to leave the country. Five members of the Russia national team’s coaching staff have refused to return home after last weekend’s friendly in Kyrgyzstan.
