3,000 athletes from 31 countries will participate in six disciplines and four venues in Bilbao and Bizkaia from the 17th to the 14th of this month

About 8,000 people including athletes and companions from 30 countries; four venues (Bilbao, Balmaseda-Enkarterri, Bermeo-Urdaibai and Portugalete-Getxo); and six disciplines (duathlon, cross duathlon, cross triathlon, aquathlon, aquabike and medium distance triathlon -all of them based on triathlon-). These are some of the striking data of the Multisport Triathlon European Championship that will take place from the 17th to the 24th of this month in Bilbao-Bizkaia, an event organized by the Spanish Federation with the collaboration of Innevento and whose economic impact is estimated at 10 million euros.

The most massive event will be the duathlon (standard and sprint) with 850 athletes this Saturday in Bilbao. The city also hosts a week later the middle distance triathlon (710 participants) and aquabike (325 registered). Balmaseda-Enkarterri will receive more than 200 cross duathlon participants on Tuesday 20, while Bermeo-Urdaibai will host the cross triathlon on Thursday 22 with almost 300 athletes. Portugalete and Getxo will be the towns hosting the aquathlon on Friday the 23rd, where more than 500 people are expected to compete. In total there will be almost 3,000 athletes distributed among all categories (elite, sub-23, junior, paratriathlon, age groups and Open) who will project a magnificent triathlon party where three dozen countries will be represented. The country with the most representation by far is the United Kingdom (1,345), due to the 112 French, 102 Germans and 70 Italians and Portuguese, for example. Spain will compete with 942 athletes. Just before the presentation there was a claim from a group of people who applied for official status in the Euskal Selekzioa.

8,000 people from 31 countries

Mayor Juan María Aburto, after speaking for a minute with those who claimed official status and competed with Basque badges, intervened to say that “we have never stopped looking for formulas and holding events that fill the streets of the Villa. At last, we have returned to massive events with record figures. We will now be visited by more than 8,000 people from 31 countries. It is a unique opportunity to show Bilbao and Bizkaia as a unique destination, also showing that estuary that 30 years ago could be the object of few things and through which we could not transit and today hosts European tests.

For his part, the president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation José Hidalgo stressed that this “is the most massive post-pandemic event to be held in terms of triathlon. It will be the championship of experiences. In addition, the vice president of the European Federation Chris Kitchen valued that “we are in a fantastic place with mountains, sea and estuary and I am sure that the athletes will end up delighted”. The mayors of the municipalities that are the headquarters of this European also took part.
