“The end of innocence for the world of sport”: 50 years ago, the tragedy of the Munich Games

It is 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 1972, and the Games of the XX Olympiad in Munich (August 26-September 11) are in full swing. 36 years after the Berlin Games under the Nazi flag, Germany, the FRG at that time, once again welcomes the Lords of the Rings and wants to make people forget many horrors. Charles Biétry, the future sports boss of Canal + and one of the future founders of BeIN Sports then a young reporter, remembers: “At that time, the Olympic truce was not a cliché. Athletes, supervisors, journalists… everyone rubbed shoulders, it was an extraordinary brotherhood. The German organizers also really wanted to erase the memory of the disastrous Games in Berlin. We were far from imagining what was going to happen. »
