The campaign “Riga – the running capital of the world” hopes for a record number of marathon tourists / Article

Already in September, the organizers of the largest national sports event in the Baltics are starting a tour of European classic running events in order to attract at least 30,000 marathon tourists to the Riga Marathon in May 2023 and the first World Running Championships in October.

“Just like “Rimi” in the Riga Marathon in May, also in the first world running championship, which will crown the world champions in the half-marathon, five-kilometer and mile distances in October 2023 in Riga, every running lover will be able to run together with the world’s elite runners,” explained “Rimi” Aigars Nords, head of the organizing team of the Riga Marathon and World Running Championships in Riga. “We will start the registration for the distances of the world championship in two weeks, and I think that running fans from Latvia and all over the world will try to take advantage of the unique opportunity to win three world championship medals.”

The organizers of the international awareness campaign start a year before the event, because they want the name of Riga as the world’s running capital to spread far and wide and the streets of the capital to be filled with runners in 2023.

The first stop of the campaign “Riga – the running capital of the world” in the middle of September is the Copenhagen Half Marathon, which is one of the most popular running events not only in Northern Europe, but also in the world, with 25,000 runners. In a week from September 22 to 25, Riga will present itself in Berlin, where one of the world’s most important marathons will take place with almost 40 thousand participants.

In Copenhagen and Berlin, the organizers dressed in folk costumes will present Riga with giant letters “RIGA 23”, mini versions of which are immortalized in a symbolic photo on Brīvības Street in Riga before leaving.

In the autumn of 2022 and in the spring and summer of 2023, the promotion campaign of “Riga – the running capital of the world” will continue, and the participation of the organizers in important running events is also planned.

The Riga Marathon in 2023 will be held on May 6 and 7. Registration for the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km, as well as the mile run is already open on the event’s official website. Registration for the short distances of the Children’s Day marathon, as well as the traditional Latvian School Cup, where students will have the opportunity to apply for a symbolic participation fee, will be opened at the beginning of 2023.

On the other hand, registration for the distances of the world championship running – half marathon, 5 kilometers and mile – will be opened on September 30, or exactly one year before the event.
