Terzic admits: BVB squad “still needs improvement”

After seven Bundesliga matchdays, BVB is promising in second place. Five of seven matches were won, only Union Berlin is currently enthroned in front of Borussia. In the international break, Dortmund and their coach Edin Terzic can finally take a deep breath – and draw a first interim conclusion.

Normally, the tight schedule at BVB leaves Edin Terzic little time for chatting. On Wednesday, however, the native of Menden made an exception and paid a visit to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”.

As part of the format “19:09 – the black and yellow talk”, the 39-year-old commented in detail on the start of the Westphalia season, the newcomers and some problem children.

The memories of the Revierderby against FC Schalke are still very fresh, that Borussia narrowly but deservedly won 1-0 (0-0).

“These are the best three points you can get,” Terzic repeated the statement he made at the press conference after the game. The plan was “to deliver a clear and controlled game”. In the end you could have “won more”.

Terzic wants to show BVB jewel Moukoko “what’s not so good yet”

Substitute youngster Youssoufa Moukoko became a hero on the BVB side, whose header made the difference.

Terzic then remarked to his protégé that “a great burden fell off him”. Previously, the teenager was considered dissatisfied because Anthony Modeste was usually preferred to him.

“But it’s also my job to tell him at the young age of 17 what’s not so good,” the trainer clarified.

BVB squad “still needs improvement”

Overall, Terzic is satisfied with the start of the season, but at the same time sees a few areas in which improvement is needed.

“We want to find a balance between offense and defence,” explained the Dortmund coach, who has so far been relatively successful, at least in the Bundesliga. After seven matches, the goal difference from a black and yellow point of view is 9:7.

In the ideal state, he generally doesn’t quite see the team. “The squad still needs to be optimised. This doesn’t have to be done via the transfer market, but also on the training ground,” emphasized Terzic.

BVB problem child Modeste “will be our top striker”

Meanwhile, Terzic defended himself against the growing criticism of new signing Anthony Modeste, who was brought in at short notice to replace Sébastien Haller, who was suffering from testicular cancer.

“Unfortunately, he’s only been training with us for a short time. We’re happy with him,” emphasized the 39-year-old, adding: “Anthony will be our top striker. We as a team have to use his weapons.”

Jude Bellingham, on the other hand, has long been established as a weapon and, despite his tender age, it is hard to imagine BVB’s midfield without him.

“He stands for everything we want to stand for. I know what’s in him,” said Terzic, but qualified: “We talk about what we can improve every day.”

The fact that his top performer could be gone next summer – half the Premier League is supposed to be chasing Bellingham – doesn’t worry the Sauerland meanwhile.

“I’m not thinking about offers. I’m glad he’s here with us. I hope he stays with us for a long time,” concluded Terzic.
