Silver Lake acquires 4.1% stake and becomes one of the largest shareholders of City Football Group

Venture capital investor Silver Lake has become the second largest shareholder in City Football Group (CFG), increasing its stake to 14.5%. The company bought an additional 4.1% of CFG from China Media Capital, according to the Financial Times. China Media Capital kept 8.2% of the group.

The City Group, in addition to owning Manchester City, also owns Girona (Spain), New York City (United States), Melbourne City (Australia), Mumbai City (India), Lommel (Belgium), Troyes (France), Montevideo City Torque (Uruguay), Yokohama Marinos (Japan) and Sichuan Jiuniu (China).

In Brazil, the CFG negotiates the Sociedade Anônima do Futebol (SAF) of Bahia.

In 2019, Silver Lake acquired 10% in CFG for $500 million. Last June, the company invested $200 million in commercial rights for the All Blacks, New Zealand’s rugby team.

It is worth remembering that Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, from Abu Dhabi, controls the CFG through Newton Investment and Development. Khaldoon al-Mubarak, chairman of Manchester City, is the chief executive of Mubadala, an Abu Dhabi investment fund that acquired a stake in Silver Lake in 2020, strengthening ties between the investor and the Abu Dhabi group.
