The plan is in place, now the supervisory board of VfL Wolfsburg wants to clarify the situation during the international break: Sports director Marcel Schäfer is to take over as sports director in February, replacing Jörg Schmadtke, who will then retire.
Details still have to be discussed, for example how the new Volkswagen boss Oliver Blume feels about the car company’s commitment to football. Schäfer has now had four and a half years of “training” under Schmadtke and, after the highs in the first three years that led to the Champions League, has also experienced the lows of the past season, which are now threatening to repeat themselves. Difficult situations, according to the assessment of the control committee, which the 38-year-old mastered well.
If Schäfer becomes the boss, the next step is to clarify how and in what form his current post will be assigned. According to kicker information, Sebastian Schindzielorz is a name at the top of the list that had already been traded as a possible Schmadtke successor. The 43-year-old recently resigned as managing director in Bochum and his contract expires at the end of the year. Schindzielorz, who used to play with Schäfer in Wolfsburg, could start straight away in February.
