PSG: Donnarumma, the gift of getting into it …

Propelled by Christophe Galtier, Gianluigi Donnarumma experienced another contrasting evening against Juventus (2-1) on Tuesday for Paris Saint-Germain’s entry into the Champions League. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes frustrating, the Italian porter once again showed two distinct faces.

Donnarumma was decisive against Juventus, but…

Six months. Six months waiting, ruminating, boiling. Meanwhile, another blow to the head with the elimination of the World Cup race. Six months thinking about this meeting in the Champions League to draw a shot at the mistake that sent Paris Saint-Germain into the ravine one evening in March in Madrid. Six months… for nothing, or almost.

Two great saves… and one mistake

Propelled goalkeeper by Christophe Galtier, Gianluigi Donnarumma (23) did not reassure against Juventus (2-1) on Tuesday. The most optimistic retained his two exceptional parades on the heads of Arkadiusz Milik and Dusan Vlahovic. And they are right to highlight these two high-class interventions from the Italian goalkeeper, who is still impressive on his line. But aside from that, the best player of the last Euro has again shown worrying limits.

While Paris was quietly steering its boat and Kylian Mbapp could have sheltered his people with a touch of altruism, the last bastion of the Squadra Azzurra was once again shown to be feverish in its reading of the game. On the goal Weston McKennie’s equalizer, he left in a way that was too little authoritarian, changing his mind before the resumption of the lead in the American midfield, only to be surprised. A hesitation that put the Old Lady back in the game.

Navas is still there…

If PSG managed to impose themselves, these repetitive errors by Donnarumma have a perverse effect on their relationship with their defenders, who were also not imperial in the duels of the header with the Turin attackers. With so little assurance in his decision-making, his aerial outings or even his kicking game, the French champion will have structural problems which will inevitably be exploited by his opponents.

To make matters worse, Donnarumma thought he was going to play this season with the certainty of being the undisputed number one. For the time being, this status is not in question. But if he does not correct this recurring fault immediately, the pressure could increase with the retention of Keylor Navas in the workforce. In any case, the Costa Rican goalkeeper will not miss the opportunity to show that he can be reliable at any time.
