NFL: Steelers will want to offer a better aerial game in Cleveland on Thursday

Mitch Trubisky became the Steelers’ starting quarterback in large part because he did nothing that would cause him to lose the job.

He made good decisions during the preseason games, avoiding turnovers.

However, it takes a little more in the regular season, and Trubisky is aware of that.

Thursday, the Steelers (1-1) will come to Cleveland (1-1) with only two touchdowns on the clock this season.

“We need to score more points no matter how,” Trubisky said.

During the off-season, the club wanted to remedy this, after very average results in many attacking categories in 2021.

The Steelers signed Trubisky and drafted promising quarterback Kenny Pickett. They changed the offensive line and they also drafted a six-foot-three winger, George Pickens.

However, Trubisky’s two longest passes this year have been to tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Zach Gentry, in plays where the latter have done the heavy lifting for sizable gains. And Pickens only caught two passes, for 23 yards.

Sunday against the Pats, Diontae Johnson showed signs of frustration when he was passed over as a target.

“We have some very talented young playmakers,” coach Mike Tomlin said. They want the chance to make big plays. »

It remains that it may be necessary to dare a little more, especially since the defense seems to be doing well. Last year, the group showed the league’s worst performance against the run.

“There’s a fine line between playing conservative or a bit aggressive,” Trubisky said. You want to keep in mind that you shouldn’t just rely on the defense, even if it excels. »

Renowned linebacker TJ Watt is missing, however, with a pectoral injury.

The Steelers didn’t get a sack against New England. They also caused just one turnover from five the previous week in Cincinnati.

Offensively, the Steelers’ most experienced starter is right tackle Chuks Okorafor, who is in his fifth season.

On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Matt Canada expressed confidence in the development process. A process including in particular Pickens, who is only 21 years old. The latter said that it can unlock quickly.

“Maybe on Thursday someone will make a 90-yard catch,” the former Bulldog said. And then everyone would be excited. It can happen anytime. »

For the Steelers, the sooner the better.
