Germany’s World Cup group opponents Spain suffered a surprising defeat in the Nations League. The Spaniards lost 2-1 (0-1) against Switzerland in Zaragoza and have to worry about winning the group.

Ex-Dortmunder Manuel Akanji (21st minute) and former Mönchengladbacher Breel Embolo (59th) scored the goals for the Swiss, Jordi Alba (55th) managed to equalize for the hosts in the meantime. In the final top game, the Spaniards need a win in Portugal on Tuesday to still win the group and thus qualify for the final tournament next year.

The Portuguese warmed up for the top duel with a 4-0 (1-0) win in the Czech Republic. A brace from Diogo Dalot (33’/52′), Bruno Fernandes (45’+2′) and Diogo Jota (82′) ensured success in Prague. Although the Portuguese were mostly superior, the Czech Republic also had good chances. Top scorer Patrik Schick from Bayer Leverkusen missed the best: in added time in the first half (45+6) he shot a hand penalty over the goal. Cristiano Ronaldo had previously caught the ball in his own penalty area.
