OAKLAND, Calif. –Tony La Russa has been cleared by his doctors to attend the number 34 jersey retirement ceremony with former pitcher Dave Stewart’s Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
According to the Chicago White Sox, of which he is the manager, La Russa will travel with the team to Chicago after the last game of the series between the White Sox and the Athletics on Sunday.
However, the 77-year-old baseball Hall of Famer has yet to receive clearance from his doctors to return to his managerial duties.
La Russa served as Stewart’s manager for some of his best years at Oakland, including four consecutive 20-win campaigns between 1987 and 1990, and the Athletics’ World Series win in 1989.
La Russa missed a 12th straight game on Saturday due to unspecified health issues.
Miguel Cairo, La Russa’s assistant in the dugout, has taken over as manager of the reigning American League Central champions.
