The jersey set a new record for a sportsman’s collector’s item at the auction, according to auction house Sotheby’s.

Jordan wore his team’s Chicago Bulls number 23 red jersey in the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals series, where he won his sixth and final championship. Sotheby’s auctioned a pair of Jordan basketball shoes last year for almost $1.5 million.

The Jordan jersey easily surpassed the record price set by a jersey worn by Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona last year. The shirt in which Maradona scored his legendary “Hand of God” goal in 1986 was sold at auction for the equivalent of $8.6 million.
