The tile. Injured in an ankle during the preparation camp this summer in Soustons (Landes), Maxime-Gaël Ngayap-Hambou (21) is forced to forfeit the World Championships in Tashkent (October 6-13). A blow for the promising young man is evidenced by his third place at the Tbilisi Grand Slam last June.
“We were waiting for the results of the medical examinations… Maxime-Gaël is one of those dynamic young people full of desire. Unfortunately, injury is part of an athlete’s life,” sympathizes Larbi Benboudaoud, high performance director at the French Judo Federation.

Designated reservist in this category of -90 kg, Alexis Mathieu (22 years old) therefore becomes holder for the deadline in Uzbekistan. He won the bronze medal at Euro Junior 2020 and was part of the collective adventure at the 2021 Worlds where he won team silver with France. In addition, Alexis Mathieu, 2021 French champion of -90 kg, has just joined PSG judo, from Sucy judo, where he has signed up until August 31, 2024.
The Worlds in Uzbekistan ending with the mixed team event (France is the reigning Olympic champion) on October 13, so another athlete must be selected. “We still have time to add an athlete to the team,” said Larbi Benboudaoud.
