Loris Karius as Newcastle firefighter

The English club, victim of a hecatomb on the goalkeeper side, hires the former Liverpool goalkeeper until January.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has joined Newcastle on a short-term basis to make up for the absences of injured Nick Pope and substitute Karl Darlow, the club announced on Monday.

The 29-year-old German, free since leaving Liverpool in June, has signed up for three months until January, with the possibility of extending his contract until the end of the season.

«He is a very good goalkeeper with experience at Premier League and European level and he will provide competition and support in this important phase of the season.“praised Magpies coach Eddie Howe.

Notorious for his calamitous performance in the 2018 Champions League final, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid, Karius had gone from Liverpool’s number 1 goalkeeper to unwanted player.

He had notably been loaned to Besiktas and Union Berlin in recent years.

After six league games, Newcastle are eleventh in the Premier League with seven points and only one victory since the start of the season.
