Ligue 1: Monaco tames Lyon (2-1)

We had to wait for the 7th day of Ligue 1 to see Monaco win their first success at home. After conceding 8 goals against Lens and Troyes in their last two outings at Louis II, Philippe Clément’s men took the match by the right end this Sunday against OL to finally win 2-1 .

In a rhythmic and pleasant first period, Krepin Diatta finds the right post of Anthony Lopes before Breel Embolo collides with the Portuguese goalkeeper on a full axis header. Two clear situations to which the Lyonnais will not be long in responding. From half an hour into the game, the players of Peter Bosz, beaten by Lorient in the middle of the week, let go of the horses and put the rearguard of the premises to the test. However, Tetê’s attempt goes over, that of Lacazette too far to the left and Tagliafico sees his shot captured by Nübel.

A history of set pieces

When they return from the locker room, OL will pay a high price for this offensive inefficiency. Shortly before the hour mark, Benoît Badiashile got rid of Thiago Mendes’ marking to catapult a header into Lopes’ net from a Caio Henrique corner. A few moments later, the Brazilian side distills a new offering, from a free kick this time, for Guillermo Maripan, the other Monegasque central defender.

The Lyonnais were therefore punished on two set pieces even though they had taken care to work on these sequences of play for long minutes during the warm-up. “We knew they were dangerous from set pieces, we know that is our weak point. It’s a shame because we were good in the game but we make mistakes that we can avoid, ”acknowledged Lacazette at the microphone of Prime Video. In the 81st minute, Karl Toko-Ekambi reduced the gap with a nice volley with his right foot but ASM held on and validated this second consecutive victory, despite the many attacks from Lyon. In the standings, Monaco gains four places and climbs to 7th place. Lyon (still 5th) remains on two defeats in the league and will host Paris next Sunday. “We want to erase our faults before welcoming Paris”, assures Karl Toko-Ekambi.
