No one beats Team World five times in a row. This is the message that captain John McEnroe wanted to convey, beaten in the first four editions by Team Europe. The “rest of the world” ended this series by having an absolutely perfect Sunday.
In a press conference, the American remembered the sentence of the former world number 3, Vitas Gerulaitis, following a victory against Jimmy Connors, who had beaten him in their last sixteen confrontations.
“It reminds me of my late and great friend Vitas Gerulaitis, who left us with one of the greatest quotes in sports history: ‘No one beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row’. It’s amazing, obviously great for us, great for me and great for the event. I think people have really understood why this is such a big event”rejoiced the man with 7 Grand Slam singles titles.
