As the World Cup in Qatar kicks off in a few weeks, injuries in Europe’s big five leagues have increased by 20% compared to last season.

Injuries in Europe’s big five leagues rose by 20% last season and cost clubs around half a billion pounds, according to a new study, which raises concerns about player well-being amid match crowding. Insurance broker Howden’s European Football Injury Index estimated injury costs rose 29% to $559.6m for the 2021-22 season, with Paris St Germain topping the list with $35m .

Dizzying rise for injuries

Injury cost is calculated by multiplying a player’s daily cost by the number of days they were unavailable. Wage inflation also played a role in this increase. The Premier League recorded the highest number of injuries (1,231), followed by the German Bundesliga (1,205) and the Spanish La Liga (848). Real Madrid have recorded the most absences (114), while Bayern Munich and Chelsea have both suffered 97 injuries. Considering the last two seasons, it is reasonable to conclude that the disruption of matches (due to Covid-19) and congestion have an impact in terms of injuries.said James Burrows, head of sports at Howden.
