Through the European non-fungible token (NFT) platform Sorare, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is developing a fantasy basketball game based on digital collectibles. The American Basketball League and its players’ union, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), announced in a statement on their website that they have entered into a multi-year partnership with the Paris-based company. Sorare becomes NBA’s “Official NFT Fantasy Partner”.
The fantasy game will involve users creating a series of NFT-based collectibles featuring NBA star players who earn points based on their real performance. The game will be released during the 2022-23 season in October.
After Major League Baseball (MLB), the NBA is the latest top sports league to partner with Sorare. Last year, the Bundesliga, Germany’s top football league, and the Spanish league, La Liga, took advantage of Sorare’s NFT capabilities.
Sorare develops NFT-based sports games, licenses major leagues and teams, and claims to have 2 million registered users in 185 countries. The NBA’s digital asset-related activities have been established through the digital collectibles platform Top Shot, where users can purchase game highlights on the Flow blockchain. Top Shot sales topped $1 billion in May.
