Former WNBA champion Candice Dupree joins Gregg Popovich’s staff

Becky Hammon is gone, to win the WNBA title at the head of the Las Vegas Aces, but Gregg Popovich has found his replacement on his bench since Candice Dupree arrives.

Former prominent figure of the WNBA, where she was seven times All-Star (2006, 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019) and champion in 2014 with the Phoenix Mercury, the former winger also participated in two campaigns victories with the American national team at the 2010 and 2014 Worlds.

Retired since last year, Candice Dupree had joined the “NBA Assistant Coaches Program”, a course created by the NBA to train former players and former players as assistants.

A few years ago, the 38-year-old basketball player did not see herself in coaching, but becoming a mother of twins (with her partner DeWanna Bonner) seems to have helped her…

“The amount of patience you need to have to manage them is extraordinary”she explained. “That’s what got me thinking, ‘You know what, I think I might be able to be a coach.’
