Germany’s victory dashed both Belgium and France, who have lost their first two games in Group C, to reach the play-offs. Australia also has two wins.

At home in Glasgow, in his 50th Davis Cup match for Great Britain, Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury lost the doubles match to lose 1-2 to the Netherlands.

In Group D, the Netherlands and the USA have two wins each, while Great Britain and Kazakhstan have two losses each.

Finally, in Group B in Valencia, Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest ever men’s world number one at the age of 19, lost to Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassim 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 2-6 after winning the US Open in his home country, with Spain conceding Canada’s superiority with 1-2 and the Spaniards not yet securing a place in the playoffs.

Alcaraz did not play in Spain’s 3-0 win over Serbia on Wednesday.

In the group, all teams retain their chances of fighting for the Davis Cup. Canada has two wins, Spain and Serbia have one each, but South Korea is still winless.
