The Spanish Daniel Gavilán got the third place, and the bronze medal, in the European Judo Championship for the Blind held in Sardinia.

They say that there is nothing better than giving the surprise. Something like this has happened to the visually impaired judoka Daniel Gavilan in the European in Italy. With all eyes on his compatriot and current Paralympic runner-up, Sergio Ibanezwho finished fifth in his category, Gavilán continued his excellent form to climb to the third step of the podium.

The Cagliari Sport Palace ‘Palapirastu’ in the capital of Sardinia, (Italy) witnessed the good work of the judoka who fulfilled the expectation of the medal with which the national team landed in the transalpine country just a few days ago. Hawkwho competed in the category of -60 kilos for visually impaired athletes (J2) showed forceful technique to knock down, in this order to Vadim Cretu (Moldova) already Youn Balcou (France) after losing in the semifinals against Zurab Zurabianide Georgia.

Fifth place for Ibáñez and Manzanedo

As for the rest of the team, Sergio Ibanez (J2 -73 kg) could not achieve metal, despite his victories against Ion Tarita, Nanig Abasliwho like Gavilán made another Georgian sterile in the semifinals: Giorgi Kaldani. In the fight for the bronze, and perhaps mentally affected by the loss of the possible gold, the Aragonese kneeled against the Lithuanian Osvaldas Bareikisfinishing in fifth place.
