Bundesliga: WAC celebrates clear victory at Rapid

The leader is the next opponent of the Green-Whites next Sunday in Wals-Siezenheim. Whether coach Ferdinand Feldhofer is still on the bench in this match is questionable. After the Styrian had recently noticed a slight upward trend, Rapid delivered a disastrous performance against WAC at times.

Especially in the early stages, the hosts seemed completely off the mark. A shot from ex-Rapidler Thierno Ballo landed on the upper arm of Martin Moormann, who was stationed on the edge of the penalty area. After a VAR consultation, referee Sebastian Gishamer awarded a penalty. Baribo converted safely (10th).

The game against WAC ended in bitter disappointment for Rapid

WAC combines at will

In the minutes that followed, the Carinthians combined effortlessly with a staggering rapid defense. Baribo used Malone, the striker defeated goalie Niklas Hedl to make it 2-0 for WAC (14th). Three minutes later, Dominik Baumgartner hit the crossbar and Baribo sunk the ball into the goal, but was ruled offside. Shortly before, a goal by the striker had not counted because of a narrow offside position.

The fans responded with chants of “We want to see Rapid” and “We want to see you fight”, Feldhofer took the overwhelmed Moormann off the seat. Rapid didn’t allow WAC any more chances after that, but only became dangerous towards the end of the first half. Guest goalie Hendrik Bonmann won attempts by Marco Grüll (43′) and Nicolas Kühn (45′).

Fan protests in the final phase

After the change of sides, Bernhard Zimmermann and Thorsten Schick came on for Patrick Greil and Martin Koscelnik. Rapid increased the pressure, Bonmann defused a Grüll free-kick (54′) and a header from Kevin Wimmer (56′). Before that, Baribo had missed the chance for the third WAC goal when he failed at Hedl (49th).

Rapid’s hopes of a turnaround were dashed in the 65th minute when Malone completed a ballo counterattack from close range. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, the video assistant reversed this decision.

While the Rapid players were trying for the honor goal and Matteo Anzolin missed the chance to make it 4-0 (77′), the West block rang out “We’re fed up”, “Feldhofer out”, “Zoki out” and ” board out”. In the final minutes, the organized fan base turned its back on the pitch. They didn’t see Zimmermann’s goal from close range in the 91st minute.
