Boxing superstar Saul Alvarez won his third duel with Gennady Golowkin and remains four-time super middleweight world champion. The 32-year-old Mexican defeated arch-rivals Kazakhstan, eight years his senior, by unanimous decision on points in Las Vegas on Sunday. After a 2017 draw and a 2018 win, Alvarez confirmed his superiority over the normally middleweight Golowkin.

With the third chapter, one of the biggest boxing rivalries of recent years should end. Golowkin announced that he wanted to continue his career as a three-time middleweight world champion. However, a fourth duel with Alvarez is difficult to imagine. The Mexican known as “Canelo” is the only boxer against whom Golowkin has lost in the 45 fights of his professional career.

Alvarez announced in the ring that he now wanted to have an operation. “My left hand needs surgery. It’s very bad. I can’t even hold a glass of water,” said Alvarez, who had already stepped into the ring with the injury. “We showed the fans three good fights.”

The supposedly last duel was not very spectacular and was characterized by Golowkin’s passivity, especially in the first half. The resulting deficit could no longer be made up.
