As an act prior to the official start of the September 2022 Festivities, which start this Saturday 17, at 9:30 p.m., with the official proclamation and the chupinazo from the balcony of the City Hall, the Plenary of Azuqueca de Henares celebrates this Friday, On the 16th, an extraordinary session to name the Popular of the Year. In this edition, at the proposal of the Peñas Públicas, the title has been awarded to international athletes from the city: the brothers Usman and Sediq Garuba (basketball), Susana Naranjo (kenpo), Óscar García (karate) and Ciro García (shooting with bow).
“Azuqueca has been recognized with the National Sports Award for our policies to promote sports, understood not only as a healthy activity, but also as a practice that favors values as important as equality, inclusion and integration”, recalls the Mayor of Azuda, José Luis Blanco. “After more than a thousand days of waiting, in these first parties after the forced parenthesis of the COVID-19 pandemic, we pay tribute to outstanding athletes in our city: four neighbors and one neighbor who are an example of effort, perseverance and enthusiasm. to reach the top in their respective disciplines”, he adds.
The Usman and Sediq Garuba brothers have had great success in basketball. Usman, who started at the Azuqueca Municipal School, plays in the NBA and is playing for the Spanish National Team in the Eurobasket. For his part, Sediq has been proclaimed European basketball champion with the Spain U18 National Team. Susana Naranjo has raised the title of kenpo world champion, in U21 tastings. Óscar García has achieved the silver medal for teams in the European karate. Ciro García has won gold in the men’s Youth TBR category at the 2022 Open Historic European Championship (archery).
Recognition of the Public Peñas
During the extraordinary plenary session, special recognition has also been planned for the 25 Peñas Públicas de Azuqueca de Henares for their responsibility during the pandemic. “The Peñas Públicas, with their nearly 3,000 peñistas, like the rest of the neighbors, acted with responsibility, generosity and solidarity and, after waiting for 1,000 days, they have returned with great desire and enthusiasm so that these festivities be the best, working during the summer so that the Parade of Floats, of National Tourist Interest, surprises us and dazzles us with magnificent designs”, concludes the mayor.
