Less than a month after being fired from the position of coach of the Argentine basketball team, Nestor “Che” Garcia found a job and will be in charge of Dominican Republic. It will be his second cycle in charge of that national team and his re-opening will be just against Albiceleste. Both teams share Group E of the classification for the 2023 World Cup which will be played in Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

García, 57, was in charge of the Central American cast that he led in the China World Cup 2019 to a good task, since it reached the second round of the tournament. In his second World Cup presence he won two, lost four and finished in the thirteenth final position in that championship.

Che will once again sit on the Dominican team’s bench on Thursday, November 10, when he will face Argentina at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo. It will be the first day of the four that will make up that window. In February the faces will be seen again, but in Argentina.

On August 30, the Argentine Basketball Confederation announced the departure of García as strategist for the national team. after a series of attitudes that were reproached by the players and that ended up triggering his disengagement.

In qualifying for the World Cup, the Dominican Republic is fourth in the group with five wins and three losses. Their zone is led by Canada with 16 points and their escort is Venezuela (15). Behind are Argentina (14), whose next match will have a final climate. Panama (10) and Bahamas (10) are next. After that date there will be three more left in November (11, 13 and 14) and the four from the February window (23, 24, 26 and 27).

The format of the Qualifying of the Americas is made up of six windows during 15 months. The action kicked off in November of last year and will culminate in February 2023, with the national teams playing home and away games in each of these windows. Seven countries will get a place to compete in the World Cup.

Argentina will seek to get one of those passes and Pablo Prigioni, a former member of the Golden Generation, was appointed as Garcia’s replacement. His presentation was auspicious since in its first contest the albiceleste team won the title in the Americup with six wins in a row, including successes in the semifinal against USA (82-73), and in the final against the local, Brazil (75-73).
