Winning comeback for Osaka
08/03/2022 At 05:29
Gauff, more aggressive and enterprising, often outflanked Osaka, who returned to competition this week after two months out with a persistent Achilles tendon injury.
The former world number 1, now ranked 41st and who is again trained by her father Leonard François after two years under the leadership of Wim Fissette, had the merit of hanging on in the game, despite the domination of her opponent.
It took 8 match points
Trailing 5-2 in the second set, Osaka first saved four match points on his engagement, before unbreaking in stride. She then erased three others, still on her serve as she trailed 0-40.
Returning to 5-4, the Japanese ended up giving in on the 8th match point conceded to Gauff, who ultimately did not procrastinate too much when concluding in 1:29. Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, seeded N.4, suffered to reach the quarter-finals, at the expense of the American qualifying Caroline Dolehide 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. She will face the Russian Daria Kasatkina.
