WTA: Canadian Rebecca Marino defeated in the quarter-finals in Washington

WASHINGTON — Canada’s Rebecca Marino lost out in the quarterfinals of the Citi Open on Friday, 6-1, 7-5 over Australian Daria Saville.

Marino, 111th racket in the world, was defeated in just one hour and 19 minutes of play.

The Canadian managed to save just one of the six break points she faced while her rival was able to save six in seven chances.

Saville will face Estonian Kaia Kanepi, seeded sixth, in the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, Kanepi edged Anna Kalinskaya 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3.

Liudmila Samsonova (60th) and Xiyu Wang (95th) created the surprises of the day, eliminating Emma Raducanu (10th) and Victoria Azarenka (20th) respectively.

The Russian was more solid than the Briton, who will have the heavy task of defending her title at the US Open in three weeks, winning 7-6 (8/6), 6-1.

The Chinese took advantage of the physical failure of the Belarusian to win their duel 6-1, 6-3.

They will compete for a place in the final.
