During the final training session on Saturday evening, the German soccer players looked wide-eyed through the wide expanse of Wembley with its 90,000 red seats. “The stadium is impressive even when empty. The anticipation is very, very great,” said vice-captain Svenja Huth before the dream final of the European Championship against England.
England champions for the first time
In the end it wasn’t enough for the title. For the first time, England are European champions for women. The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg lost 1:2 after extra time against the host team. But regardless of that, the DFB women have managed to return to the big stage with a tournament that has been convincing so far: in 2017 at the European Championships and 2019 at the World Cup, the 2016 Olympic champion was eliminated in the quarter-finals and missed the Tokyo games.
