Wolff wants a stronger approach to porpoising: “It’s a medical question”

Since this season, new rules have come into force in Formula 1. The new regulations make for more exciting races, but it also has an unpleasant by-product. After all, many teams and drivers suffered from the new phenomenon of porpoising: the bumping of the cars.

The Mercedes team in particular suffered a lot from the bounce. The German racing stable complained stone and bone and pointed to the safety of the drivers. The FIA motorsport federation listened and from the Belgian Grand Prix, measures will be taken against the bump. More measures will be taken next season.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is very pleased that the FIA will take measures. Still, the Austrian wants to be caught by it. Speaking to Motorsport.com, he compares the situation with the American Football competition NFL: “It is very simple. We have always said that if we do it, we have to do it right. The FIA has a medical analysis which states that frequencies of 1 or 2 hertz for a few minutes can lead to long-term brain damage. We have six to seven hertz for several hours. The FIA has no choice at all and has to do something. I think it’s irrelevant that we don’t do anything about it or that teams are against. It’s a medical question that needs to be answered.”
