In their forties, the Williams sisters are certainly not finished in global top tennis. A month after Serena’s return to Wimbledon, the older of the two has also returned to singles with 42-year-old Venus.

And that really wasn’t a publicity stunt from the Citi Open, the WTA tournament in Washington. Williams got the audience back on the benches with a lot of nice points, even though a lack of match rhythm cost her the match against Rebecca Marino (6-4, 1-6, 4-6). Williams still led 4-1 in the deciding set.

“My game was still a bit rusty,” she said after her return, after almost a year of absence. “That was to be expected. I have to play more tournaments to be able to play better.”

Williams had participated in the doubles at Wimbledon, where she had already won her last victory more than a year ago. All her points on the world ranking have now evaporated, just like those of her almost 41-year-old sister Serena.

Venus in Serena in Toronto

The two are preparing for the US Open (from August 29) and were already on the track together in Washington for training. Next week they will both participate in the Toronto tournament.

The eldest Williams won seven grand slam titles, Olympic gold in singles and was number one in the world for eleven weeks more than twenty years ago.
