US Open – Stefanos Tsitsipas surprisingly fails in round one at Daniel Elahi Galán

The US Open is and will remain a tough place for Stefanos Tsitsipas.

After two third-round defeats in the past two years, the 24-year-old was even caught in the opening round this time.

However, Tsitsipas had to have his right forearm massaged several times during the encounter.

Nevertheless: Galán showed a splendid performance. After two hours and 48 minutes, the world number 94 had. brought number four on the seeding list to its knees.

Tsitsipas didn’t get into the match at all. In the first set, the favorite scored a total of seven points and lost the first eleven games of the game down to a score of 0:6, 0:5. A desolate performance until then.

Tsitsipas fends off eight match points

When Tsitsipas came back in the third set (6: 3), the tide seemed to turn. Not even close. Galán stayed focused and finally used his ninth (!) match point.

“It was definitely the best game of my career, not only because of the circumstances but also because of the opponent,” said the delighted Colombian, who played 6-0 against top 20 professionals.

The 26-year-old now faces Australia’s Jordan Thompson, who defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 2-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
