US Open | Retreat from glory or a bet on thirteen? Can the Czech irons break the bank at the US Open?

Petra Kvitová (21st in WTA). At thirty-two, she is the Czech number one again. She joined the wider circle of favorites by advancing to the finals in Cincinnati, where the recently engaged player looked physically well prepared. She has played the most quarterfinals in New York (2015 and 2017) and is defending the third round. At the start, she will be the favorite against the 18-year-old Russian qualifier Andrejeva.

Karolína Plíšková (22.). She played in the semifinals in Toronto, but this year’s match score of 15:14 does not portend anything revolutionary. The 30-year-old tennis player followed up the 2016 final by advancing to the quarterfinals three times, where she also made it last year. He will present Leoš Friedl as a coach for the first time at the Grand Slams. Poland should not give Linette a ‘sniff’ in the first round, she has a 6:1 record against her. Then she would go to the winner of the Czech duel Bouzková-Nosková.

Barbora Krejčíková (23rd). Where are the points from last year? The French Open 2021 winner’s return from injury is not going well at all, her form has faded. She burned on concrete in Prague, Toronto, Cincinnati and Cleveland. But she should beat the Mexican Gomez (201st). With Kateřina Siniaková, she certainly wants to follow up on the triumphs from the Australian Open and Wimbledon in doubles. But the question mark is the state of health of the teammate.

Marie Bouzková (41.). If points were awarded for Wimbledon, its quarter-finalist and the winner of the tournament from Prague could already be in the top 30 and among the seeds at the Grand Slam. But if she stays healthy, she will also show the New York audience her progress this year. At the beginning, however, he must show experience against Linda Nosková. She recently defeated a young compatriot in the semi-finals in Prague.

Tereza Martincová (69.). She got rid of the weight of defeats in the first matches of tournaments overseas. In Cincinnati, she fought an even battle with world number two Kontaveit. However, she is not doing well in New York, she was eliminated four times in the first round. Seasoned Estonian Kanepiová is initially very unpleasant.

Kateřina Siniaková (77th). This year, the WTA eighth-ranked player cannot catch up. In Poland, she even increased her self-confidence at the ITF tournament, but it did not show on the American concrete. Traditionally, much more is expected from her in the doubles, if the back she injured in Cleveland holds up.

Linda Nosková (87th). She has already achieved her goal of being in the top 100 this year. Due to the early deadline for applications, last year’s junior winner at the French Open in New York had to qualify, but she managed it perfectly. Tomáš Krupa’s ward also ran with the 2014 Wimbledon finalist Canadian Bouchard. In the first round, he will have a Czech battle with Maria Bouzková.

Linda Fruhvirtová (158th). In March, the older (17) of the talented sisters enchanted with performances and results in Miami and earned her debut in the BJK Cup. However, her premiere in the main Grand Slam competition awaits her only in New York after three wins in the qualification, where she has already had dinner with the departing champion Serena Williams. China’s Wang Sin-yü does not look invincible in the first round.

Sarah Bejlek (194). The biggest Czech surprise. The sixteen-year-old native of Hrušovan nad Jevišovka doesn’t mind that. She won the ITF tournament in Olomouc as well as the New York qualification, beating the former world number 10 Mladenovic of France and the experienced Briton Watson. Great! With his height (157 cm), he does not bombard opponents with aces, but he fights fiercely until the last ball. Ruska Samsonova should be careful in the 1st round.

Karolina Muchová (235th). Technically precise, but plagued by injuries, the tennis player fell into the third hundred and uses a protected ranking to start. David Kotyza’s protege managed only 12 matches during the season and last time she scratched the American Scott at the challenger. Australia’s Tomljanovic looks like a pretty big mouthful in the first round.

Jiří Lehečka (60th in ATP). In a year, the 20-year-old Czech male number one moved up more than 130 places. However, the talented youngster is still waiting for a win in the main competition of the Grand Slam. In the first rounds this year, he lost in Australia to the Bulgarian Dimitrov, in Paris to the Belgian Goffin and in Wimbledon in five sets to the Serbian Krajinovic. On concrete, he struggled a bit with his serve, but he could already break it in the 1st round against Chilan Garin. Although he was in the top 20 last year, he played in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but so far he has only reached the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Jiří Veselý (68.). He did not confirm the sensational February win over Djokovic and his progress to the final in Dubai in the following months. He doesn’t do well in New York, he didn’t make it past the first round four times in a row, and he lost to an opponent ranked ninth in the world at the Grand Prix in Granby. At the start, he has the twenty-ranked Brit Evans, whom he defeated five years ago, but on clay.

Tomáš Macháč (126th). In an interview last year, he mentioned that he is most afraid of health problems. This year, however, the 21-year-old hope, who shone at last year’s Davis Cup final tournament, was slowed down for more than three months. However, he made it through the qualification, and at the start, the 21st-seeded Van De Zandschulp was chosen for him, but he is good at it. Last year he beat the Dutchman in Liberec, the year before in Koblenz.
