Players from the Phoenix Mercury, Brittney Griner’s team, and the Connecticut Sun observed 42 seconds of silence before their game Thursday in solidarity with the American WNBA star sentenced to 9 years in prison by a Russian court for drug trafficking.
The time period (42) honored Griner’s jersey, and the gesture brought players from both teams and fans to tears at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, where the moment ended with chants of “Bring her on!” to home!”.
Griner was found guilty and sentenced in a Russian court Thursday on charges of smuggling cannabis oil into that country.
