The Xunta’s commitment to badminton as a strategic modality gets its first international award with the European Junior Women’s Doubles

Two athletes from the Galician Center for Sports Technification – Lucía Rodríguez from Salvador and Nikol Carulla from Alicante – have just been proclaimed European junior badminton champions in the women’s doubles category in the city of Belgrade (Serbia), which represents the first international medal achieved by Galician badminton. The final, in which they faced the English Lisa Curtin and Estelle Van Leeuwen last Saturday, ended in two sets with a result of 21-19 and 21-16.

Both Lucía Rodríguez (CB As Neves) and Nikol Carulla (CB A Estrada) are currently training at the Centro Gallego de Tecnificación Deportiva, in the city of Pontevedra, under the command of coach Rafael Vázquez, who had also been a player for several years in the Galician badminton elite.

The Second Vice President and Regional Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Sports, Diego Calvo, celebrated Galicia’s success in the European Championship and stated that results like this “are the result of the great work that has been carried out for years in Galician modernization”. He also highlighted the commitment that Galicia has been making in recent years in favor of badminton as a strategic modality.
