A delegation of 494 people, including 382 athletes, is heading to Niagara, Ontario, as part of the Canada Summer Games from August 6 to 21.
First scheduled for 2021, this major event bringing together 5,000 participants has been postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many athletes from the Longueuil, Brossard and Saint-Lambert region are part of the delegation that will defend the fleur-de-lis. In track and field, rowing, basketball and many other disciplines, many of these athletes will be trying to reach the top step of the podium.
Exceed 138 medals
At the last summer edition presented in 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Quebec team had finished the Games in third place in the medal standings after being on the podium 138 times for 45 gold medals, 41 silver and 52 bronze.
“Once again, Quebec will be very well represented in all the sports disciplines of the Canada Games. We are proud of the preparation of the teams, which are supported by high-quality coaches,” said Quebec delegation chef de mission Richard Gamache.
During the 16 days of Niagara Canada Games, 18 sports will be presented. Note the return of lacrosse to the Games after a 36-year absence, while rugby 7s will be making its very first appearance.
The opening ceremony will take place on Saturday August 6 at 8 pm at the Meridian Center in St. Catharines. The competitions will begin on Sunday, August 7, at 9 a.m., with the start of the tennis events.
