The president of Lithuania takes away the state award from the figure skaters for their performance in Russia

The former Russian figure skater and the wife of Russian President Dmitry Peskov’s press representative, Tatyana Navka, announced on social media last week about a performance planned for August 9 at the Sochi Arena, which also included Hawk and Drobyazko.

Meanwhile, the speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, Viktorija Chmilīte-Nilsen, commented on the situation to the “tv3.lt” portal.

“Today, when Ukraine has been at war every day for six months, it is wrong and simply cynical to talk about entertainment or sports being separate from politics amid Russia’s bloody aggression. We know how Russia uses every performance, every medal, every sports victory for its propaganda. To become active participants in such propaganda is completely unjustified,” replied Chmilīte-Nilsen.

The speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas emphasized that there is currently no legal possibility to deprive Drobjazko of Lithuanian citizenship, but she has no doubt that it will be considered in the near future.

Earlier, the Chancellery of the President of Lithuania announced that it would consider withdrawing the state award from Drobjazko and Vanag if they actually perform in Sochi.

Lithuanian laws stipulate that the state award can be revoked if the recipient’s actions undermine the laureates’ reputation.

2000 World Championship bronze medalists and two-time European bronze medalists Drobjazko and Vanags received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Gediminas in 2000.
