The Playoffs – Washington President Says Franchise Can Officially ‘Football Team’ as New Name

This Tuesday (23), in an interview with the ESPN americanaJason Wright, president of the Washington Football Team, said that the franchise may be close to making the name used last season official.

The franchise continues to study possible names but, according to Wright, is seriously considering keeping the Football Team from 2022, when the new name will be officially announced. According to the president, one of the reasons would be the strong connection with the “past”.

“There is a group of people who liked ‘Washington Football Team’. Some of the reasons that are coming out of this is that Washington Football Team has something that is deeply connected to our history. The feeling is that this isn’t erasing everything we were in the past, while a new name might give that impression. It’s very important to a large part of our fans that it’s a continuation, rather than deleting everything and starting something entirely new,” Wright said.

Wright also stated that the official release of the next name could happen before the end of the next season. However, he avoided putting a deadline on the announcement.

“The sooner the better. That’s something I hear from fans. I would like it to happen soon, but it’s hard to commit to the time, because the importance here is thoroughness, rigor, and ensuring that we include all the people we need to hear. This goes against a quick announcement, but we are going as quickly as possible,” he said.

Also according to the president, the franchise will pay close attention to the wishes of the fans. According to Wright, WFT received over 15,000 name and logo ideas from over 60 countries. The organization will continue to accept nominations until April 5th.
