The legendary Roberto Clemente is declared a hero of Puerto Rico

Legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente (1934-1972), Major League Baseball (MLB) star, was added to the list of heroes or illustrious Puerto Ricans for his sports career and his help to those most in need.

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, converted into Law 61-2022 the measure to declare Clemente a heroas reported this Thursday by representative Eladio Cardona Quiles, author of the initiative.

In this way, Clemente joins other illustrious Puerto Ricans such as Eugenio María de Hostos and Ana Roqué de Duprey, so that On the third Monday of February of each year, his life, work and legacy are commemorated.

Every Puerto Rican and every Puerto Rican should know the work and legacy of Roberto Clementenot only for his sporting career, but for all the contributions and help he brought to those most in need”, said Cardona Quiles.

The legislator, who chairs the Recreation and Sports Commission of the House of Representatives, explained that he presented this project “so that future generations know and commemorate the sublime legacy of this illustrious Puerto Rican”.

The law provides that the Government of Puerto Rico, through the Department of Education and the Department of Recreation and Sports, will be in charge of commemorate, promulgate, disseminate and preserve the work, career, life and legacy of the baseball player.

Clemente played 18 seasons in the MLB, was a two-time World Series champion, he won 12 consecutive Gold Gloves and was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the National League in 1966 and the World Series in 1971.

The first Latino to connect 3,000 hits in the Major Leagues and elected 15 times to the All-Star Game, he lost his life in 1972 in a plane crash while taking aid to the victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua.

Earlier this month, the children of the deceased player filed a million-dollar lawsuit against the Government of Puerto Rico for the use without permission of the star’s name and image to raise funds.
