Tennis.- Muguruza is reunited with the victory in Toronto, Badosa retires and Sorribes falls in the second round

MADRID, 11 (EUROPA PRESS)

Badosa, who reached the semifinals last week at the tournament in San Jose, United States, was trailing 7-5, 1-0 on Wednesday when he withdrew from the Canadian tournament with apparent physical problems. Injuries weigh down a Badosa who was making a stellar progression this 2022.

The Catalan, who became number two in the world in April, said goodbye early in Toronto, where she is facing the important challenge of the US Open. Badosa suffered a lot with her serve and, although she managed to dodge the ‘break’ on many occasions, she ended up giving in.

Putintseva recovered from the break suffered in the third game and turned the set around with apparent authority. After the first game of the second set, Badosa decided to withdraw from what was his Toronto debut. Meanwhile, Sorribes could not beat her second rival, a Sabalenka who won 6-4, 6-3, two tight sets.

After a hard-fought debut, the player from Castellón fell to the sixth seed, although the match did not have a clear dominator, full of ‘breaks’, and could go anywhere. The Belarusian put a 3-0 in direct duels with the Spanish, also victorious last year and the previous one in Rome and Ostrava.

MUGURUZA RECOVERS HIS SMILE AND WINS AGAIN

The Spanish-Venezuelan Garbiñe Muguruza was the only positive note of the day for the national tennis players in Toronto. The number 8 in the world was reunited with her best tennis to beat the Estonian Kaia Kanepi with authority and solvency in two sets (6-4 and 6-4). The match started very hard for the winner of the WTA Finals, who took advantage of the irregularity in the serve of the 31st in the ranking to quickly place a 4-1 in favor.

But again there was a certain disconnection from Muguruza, something that Kanepi took advantage of to equalize and place the 4-4 in that first set. Now it was the Spaniard who had doubts with her serve, committing up to four double faults in the first set. Muguruza ended up winning the next two games to close out 6-4.

The Spanish did not recover from the difficulties with the serve and gave up the first game of the second set. Kanepi grew and made it 2-0, but after two games in which both tennis players kept their serve and with 3-2 and service for the Estonian, Muguruza pressed again and broke the number 31’s serve, making it 3-3 on the marker.

From that moment on, the Spaniard was the owner of the match, which closed with 5-4, 15-40 and a serve for Kanepi, an opportunity that she did not miss to advance to the next round. Her rival will be the Swiss Belinda Bencic (12), executioner of Serena Williams.
