Sven Nys sees Thibau making a strong debut at Trek-Segafredo: “He was a bit nervous” | cycling

In the Tour de Ain, Thibau Nys had his baptism of fire today at Trek-Segafredo. “The next 2 stages will show what Thibau can do in climbs of more than 3 kilometers”, says father Sven Nys.

At the age of 19, Thibau Nys made his childhood dream come true: racing in the Trek-Segafredo uniform.

“Thibau was a bit nervous,” says father Sven. “It is the 1st time that he rides with another team and comes into contact with new teammates. And that at a high level.”

Dragging to the front of the peloton, the better riders follow in the final. The young Nys was in the spotlight in the opening stage of the Tour de Ain.

“We can speak of a successful start,” says Nys.

“You can make it difficult for yourself if you come in arrogantly in a new team. But Thibau is not like that. He puts himself at the service of the team and is open in his communication. 2 things that are very much appreciated.”

Sven Nys is curious about the next 2 stages. “That’s 2 mountain stages. They will show what Thibau can do on climbs of more than 3 kilometers. This is the best learning experience.”

“Tour of the Future is a big goal for Thibau”

The Tour of the Ain is the first and also the last race of Thibau Nys as an intern at Trek-Segafredo.

“That has to do with the Tour of the Future later this month and the preparation for the cross season,” says Sven.

“That was also agreed in advance with Trek-Segafredo. The goal in the Tour of the Ain is also that Thibau already comes into contact with his future teammates. For example, by next year, when he turns pro, he will already be established and feel more comfortable with Trek-Segafredo.”

Thibau has punch, with which he can compete for stage victories in the Tour of the Future

The Tour of the Ain is also the ideal way for Thibau Nys to prepare for the Tour of the Future (18-28 August), say the Tour de France for promises.

“The Tour of the Future is a big goal for Thibau”, says Sven. “It will be the only time he can ride at a high level for 10 days against his peers.”

“Belgium has a very strong selection, with riders for all terrains. Thibau will try to choose a few stages. He has the punch with which he can fight for a stage victory.”
