Steph Curry’s Mom’s Genius Punishment: ‘I owed her money’

NBA (DR) / Tamron Hall (DR)

A former top volleyball player, Sonya Curry managed to raise two NBA players, including a two-time MVP and four-time champion. His methods of making Stephen so fearsome involved big fines paid by the leader to his mother!

Becoming one of the greatest players in NBA history requires several factors at different stages of life. One of the first concerns the education received as a child, and the contribution of the parents in the development of the future stars of the league. As such, Seth and Stephen Curry can consider themselves rather lucky, they who were raised by an outstanding shooter, and a high-level sports mother.

If they both owe their sniper genes to Dell, they can thank Sonya for her teaching techniques, which are certainly rigid, but with undeniable results. After nearly ruining Seth’s career, the latter has imagined a way to correct a major flaw in the game of her eldest son. All this, while possibly being able to fill up your bank account!

Sonya Curry’s salty fines to punish Steph

In 2014, a few months before his first MVP coronation, Steph revealed to Diamond Leung the San Jose Mercury News that he offered $100 to his mother… for each of his turnovers!

When I commit more than two interceptions in a game, I owe him money. On the match against Phoenix (he had committed 10 ball losses that day, editor’s note), she hit the jackpot! But if I commit less than two, I get the money back. This is my reward, my motivation.

By way of context, the Chief was just coming off a 3.8 loss average season. He therefore sought to reduce this statistic, and benefited from the costly help of his progenitor to do so. It is clear that this strategy has not necessarily borne fruit, since the star leader of the Warriors has since been running at 3.1 units per game. Fortunately, he no longer has to pull out the checkbook these days, as he admitted last May!

I stopped sending her checks a few years ago. But she always remarks to me when I lose too many balls. Fortunately, she was not in Game 2 (against Memphis, during which he lost 5 balls), because otherwise I would have been set on fire. Now it has evolved. I’m no longer afraid of taking a penalty because of my ball losses, but of receiving a text message from Mom. She’s still watching that.

Tired of losing too many balloons, Steph Curry saw his mother intervene… by taxing part of his salary. The results leave something to be desired, but did not prevent the Baby-Faced Assassin from forging a magnificent track record over the years that followed!
