Against the background of the looming energy crisis, DOSB President Thomas Weikert spoke out against the closure of sports facilities.

“The swimming pools must remain open, the halls must remain open,” demanded the head of the German Olympic Sports Confederation in an interview with the media groups “Münchner Merkur” and “tz”. “It drives me crazy when suddenly, without warning, they say that Hall XY is closed,” said the 60-year-old.

The German Association of Cities recently suggested saving money by suspending the operation of indoor swimming pools in view of rising energy prices. “You can take other measures first, such as lowering the hall temperature or the water temperature,” Weikert replied. Those responsible in the municipalities must be aware of what they will do if they close sports halls. “We are intensively trying to change the way of thinking there,” reported the sports official.
