Soccer: Poker millions for Goalgetter Kalajdzic

“His advisors know exactly what is at stake, and have been for three months. That’s why we’re still clearly in our position at the moment,” said Mislintat on Sunday after the Swabians’ goalless game in Cologne. According to the media, VfB wants 25 million euros. The offer from the English Premier League club should only be 15 million euros plus bonus payments. The numbers would add up, Mislintat said.

Kalajdzic was not in the squad on Sunday and apparently about to move to Wanderers. That’s why, at his own request, he was absent from the final training session on Saturday.

Kalajdzic not “free enough” in his head

“We have come to the conclusion that there is no point in taking him. Because he doesn’t feel free enough in his head to perform on the pitch today,” said Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo about the absence of his goalscorer.

“He said he doesn’t feel 100 percent ready in the current situation. We accept it now and have to see what happens in the next four or five days,” added Mislintat, looking ahead to the transfer window ending on September 1st.

Stuttgart win a draw outnumbered

Without Kalajdzic, the Stuttgarters fought for a point in Cologne because, despite being numerically superior, the hosts were not able to secure their second win of the season in the German Bundesliga. For more than half an hour, the billy goats played with one man more after Stuttgart’s Luca Pfeiffer (56th) and thus Kalajdzic’s substitute of all people saw the red card.

Cologne, for whom Florian Kainz and Dejan Ljubicic came on in the 59th minute, remained unbeaten after five games. The Stuttgarters are still waiting for the first success. Overall, the guests had the better chance of winning, but failed mainly due to the strong FC goalie Marvin Schwäbe. Stuttgart coach Matarazzo also received the yellow-red card in the 72nd minute because he complained too violently.

Frankfurt wins slugfest in Bremen

At the end of the fourth round, Oliver Glasner’s Frankfurt team celebrated a 4:3 (3:2) win at newly promoted Werder Bremen and, thanks to their first win of the season, moved up to eleventh place in the table with five points. For Bremen it was again the first championship defeat in 2022/23.

Mario Götze gave Frankfurt the lead in the second minute with his first league goal since his return in the summer. Anthony Jung (14′) and Leonardo Bittencourt (17′) shot Werder in front, but Randal Kolo Muani (32′), Jesper Lindström (39′) and Djibril Sow (48′) turned the game in favor of the Hessians. Niclas Füllkrug’s converted penalty kick in the second minute of added time came too late for Werder this time. Captain Marco Friedl played through, Romano Schmid came on in the 30th minute.
