Real Madrid win European Super Cup for fifth time by beating Frankfurt | NOW

Real Madrid won the European Super Cup for the fifth time in history on Wednesday evening. The team of coach Carlo Ancelotti was 2-0 too strong for Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt in Helsinki.

Defender David Alaba signed for the opening goal in the first half. Karim Benzema took all the tension out of the game in Finland after the break, where semi-automatic offside technology was tested for the first time.

In securing the fifth European Super Cup, Real Madrid is level with record holders FC Barcelona and AC Milan. ‘De Koninklijke’ also won the showdown between the European cup winners in 2002 (against UEFA Cup winner Feyenoord), 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Real Madrid won the Champions League last season by beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Frankfurt surprised with the overall victory in the Europa League, the second most important European club tournament. The Germans were too strong for the Rangers FC of trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the final after penalties.

Eintracht Frankfurt did not have a very good general for the beautiful poster with Real. The team of coach Oliver Glasner was outplayed at home by Bayern Munich at the start of the Bundesliga last Friday: 1-6. Real kicks off the new season in La Liga on Sunday with an away game against UD Almería.

Ancelotti nevertheless chose his strongest eleven in the battle for the UEFA Super Cup. Filip Kostic was missing at Eintracht Frankfurt, who will be given the time to complete his transfer to Juventus. Former PSV player Mario Götze came in for the Bundesliga club in the 58th minute.

Real Madrid get the best chances as expected

Despite the underdog position, Eintracht Frankfurt could have taken the lead against Real Madrid after fifteen minutes, when Daichi Kamada was able to take out of a promising position after a nice pass from Rafael Borré. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – the absolute star in the Champions League final – prevented an early goal.

Real Madrid’s answer was not long in coming. Vinicius Junior had already beaten goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from close range, but defender Lucas Tuta took the Brazilian’s effort off the goal line with an extreme effort.

In the 37th minute, it was still a hit for Real, just after the threatening Vinicius saw a shot tapped from the corner by Trapp. In the ensuing corner, Alaba scored from close range after a good header from Casemiro. The Brazilian was the only one on the alert after a stray header from Benzema.

Even after the break it was Real Madrid that dominated. Most of the threat came from Vinicius, who almost surprised Trapp with a shot that changed direction. Casemiro hit the bar after an hour with a long shot.

The resistance of powerless Frankfurt broke not much later. Trapp was surprised by a shot from Benzema and clumsily let the ball pass under him. Real were supreme after the 2-0 and hoped to give the imminent victory extra shine, but they only scored two goals in Helsinki.
