Real Madrid win European Super Cup for fifth time by beating Frankfurt | NOW

Real Madrid won the European Super Cup for the fifth time in history on Wednesday evening. The team of coach Carlo Ancelotti was 2-0 too strong for Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt in Helsinki.

Defender David Alaba signed for the opening goal in the first half. Karim Benzema took all the tension out of the game in Finland after the break, where semi-automatic offside technology was tested for the first time.

In securing the fifth European Super Cup, Real Madrid is level with record holders FC Barcelona and AC Milan. ‘De Koninklijke’ also won the showdown between the European cup winners in 2002 (against UEFA Cup winner Feyenoord), 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Real Madrid won the Champions League last season by beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. Frankfurt surprised with the overall victory in the Europa League, the second most important European club tournament.
